Upstate income growth slows compared to peers Print E-mail

GREENVILLE -- The Greenville metro area lagged the nation in per capita income in 2007, as well as its peers and the municipal economies to which it aspires, according to new government data out Thursday. Economic development leaders say it's the continuation of an especially troubling trend.

In 1995, the Greenville Metropolitan Statistical Area's per capita income was 98 percent of the average of its peer communities. Now, 13 years later, the Greenville region's per capita income is 89 percent of the peer communities' average, said Hank Hyatt, vice president of economic development for the Greater Greenville Chamber of Commerce.
