CHARLESTON — Motivated by the poverty and hunger he experienced as a child, Paul Hulsey, now a partner of Hulsey Law Group in Charleston, has made a $1 million donation to the Lowcountry Food Bank.
"I told myself if I ever got out of it, if I ever became somewhat successful, I would direct some of my success towards giving back to the community,” Hulsey said in a statement.
Hulsey’s donation brings the total amount of money raised by the food bank during its Growing Forward Capital Campaign to $3.7 million. Its goal is to raise $5 million, which will be used to help pay for a new headquarters. Phase 1 of the Growing Forward campaign raised $2.5 million, which allowed the food bank to acquire and begin renovating a 60,000-square-foot building in North Charleston. The organization will move into the facility this fall.
"In honor of this donation, it is with great pleasure to announce that the building will be named the Paul Hulsey Community Food and Nutrition Center," said Jermain Husser, executive director of the Lowcountry Food Bank.
"Every day, the Lowcountry Food Bank witnesses the real strength of its mission in the vital bridges it builds between local business and community service organizations,” Husser said. “On behalf of the Lowcountry Food Bank, and all the clients we serve, we are honored to have Paul's tremendous friendship and his faith in our organization.”
"This is a really exciting time for the Lowcountry Food Bank," said Shawn Jenkins, chairman of the Growing Forward Capital Campaign and president and CEO of Benefitfocus. "The new facility will give us expanded reach and capabilities to serve those in need in the 10 coastal counties. And, with this amazing donation, we are well over half way to reaching our goal."
Hulsey hopes his donation to the Growing Forward Capital Campaign will be a catalyst for others in the community.
"I like a good fight. I've had to fight for everything in my life and the fight to end hunger is a fight we'll win with the help of others. If everyone would step up and do their share we could win the battle on hunger," Hulsey said.
