COLUMBIA -- BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina has named Dr. Laura Long to a new position, vice president of clinical quality and health management.
In her new position, Long will lead the company’s efforts in provider transparency initiatives, clinical quality improvement, health and disease management strategies and programs, and clinical pharmacy management.
“Consumerism and transparency in health care are gaining momentum as the cost of health care continues to rise,” said David Pankau, BlueCross BlueShield division president. “Our customers increasingly want to reduce costs in their health plans through health and disease management programs and through provider cost and quality transparency initiatives. Further, consumers are looking for tools to help them navigate the health care system.”
Long previously served as chief medical officer and vice president of health services at BlueChoice HealthPlan of South Carolina, where she was responsible for medical and pharmacy management, quality improvement, disease management, wellness and credentialing activities.
Before joining BlueChoice HealthPlan, she was responsible for the management of the S.C. Department of Mental Health’s hospital system.
A graduate of Duke University, Long received her medical degree from the Medical College of Virginia. After completing her residency in preventive medicine and public health at the University of South Carolina, she held several positions in geriatrics with increasing levels of management responsibility.
