COLUMBIA -- Lowe’s has announced it will add a Clemson Road location to its growing set of Midlands home supply warehouses.

Work is under way on the location, near Killian Road east of Interstate 77. The Killian Road area is seeing an explosion of retail growth, including CVS/pharmacy and Rite-Aid drugstores, plus the new Wal-Mart west of the interstate.

The new Lowe’s will open sometime between February and April, company spokeswoman Maureen Rich said. It will have about 103,000 square feet indoors, plus an attached garden center, and will employ about 120 people, most of them full time, Rich said.

Lowe’s has eight stores in Richland, Lexington and Kershaw counties, the most recent being its new Red Bank location, which will open Oct. 14.

Rich said the company is slowing its aggressive growth but will still open 75 to 85 stores next year. The company opened more than 150 stores in both 2006 and 2007.

Lowe’s, with headquarters in Mooresville, N.C., had 1,577 stores in the United States and Canada as of Aug. 1.
