Several S.C. military facilities to get upgrades Print E-mail

CHARLESTON -- The U.S. Department of Defense announced $159 million in construction contracts last week that include work at several military facilities in Charleston, Sumter, Columbia and Beaufort.

A $100 million contract announced Wednesday includes new construction and renovation of industrial facilities, infrastructure, airfields, aircraft hangars, aircraft traffic control systems, administrative offices, training facilities and dormitories, according to the Defense Department.

The facilities listed under that contract are the Naval Weapons Station in Goose Creek, Charleston Air Force Base, Shaw Air Force Base in Sumter, the Marine Corps Recruit Depot in Parris Island, and the Marine Corps Air Station and Naval Hospital in Beaufort. The Marine Corps Logistics Base in Albany, Ga., also is part of the contract.

An additional $59 million contract to renovate and restore barracks at Fort Jackson was announced the day before. The contract, awarded to Sauer Inc. of Jacksonville, Fla., has a completion date of late 2010 and will be administered by the Army Engineer District in Charleston.

Details of the projects, including the number of jobs created and exact plans for each facility, were unavailable.

The contract was awarded to Team Construction LLC of Jacksonville, N.C.; Slone Associates Inc. of Valdosta, Ga.; Spec Pro Environmental Services LLC of Oak Ridge, Tenn.; HCR/Cape JV LLC of Suwanee, Ga.; and J2 Engineering Inc. of Tampa, Fla.
