Lake City -- Eugene T. Moore, a Lake City educator and the father of South Carolina philanthropist Darla Moore, died Sunday.
Darla Moore, for whom the University of South Carolina’s Moore School of Business is named, gave $10 million to Clemson University in 2003 and the school named its teacher education program after her father, a 1949 Clemson graduate who had a long career as a teacher, coach and principal in Lake City.
“Even if he were not my father, I would find it appropriate to see his name attached to a school of education, where many of the nation’s future teachers and principals will launch their careers,” Moore states in a tribute to her father on Clemson’s Web site. “He has played an important role in the lives of many young people in this state. We are proud to be part of the Clemson family — a strong network of alumni, colleagues, friends and other professionals.”
According to information from Clemson, the Lake City native distinguished himself on the playing field at Clemson as center of the undefeated 1948 football team and as captain of the 1949 team. He also played on the Tiger baseball team.
