COLUMBIA -- South Carolina Electric & Gas is donating $250,000 to Project Share, its charitable effort to help low-income customers with heating costs this winter. The utility is inviting customers to join in.

In addition to the donation, SCE&G will fully match $100,000 in customer and employee contributions through the end of the year, the utility said Thursday in a statement.

A donation form will accompany November bills or can be downloaded online, www.sceg.com the utility said.

SCE&G emphasizes that 100% of the money is passed along to needy households. Project Share funds are given out by local community action agencies.

“Considering the economic challenges facing so many people, from the gasoline pump to payment of energy bills, we anticipate a tough heating season that will leave even more families in need of help to heat their homes,” SCE&G President Kevin Marsh said in the statement. “We hope this dollar-for-dollar match will inspire those who are able to give so that Project Share can help more families have a warm winter.”
