CHARLESTON -- Charleston County Council Chairman Tim Scott will serve as chairman of the largest freshman class since 1992 to enter the S.C. House of Representatives.
Scott joins 23 other newcomers to the House. In the largely ceremonial position, he will help build relationships within the freshman class and with veteran lawmakers.
Scott will take the oath of office Dec. 1, at which time he will officially relinquish his role as county council chairman.
“I’m honored to be chosen as the chairman of the freshman class,” Scott said. “I’m looking forward to working with Republicans and Democrats, new members and seasoned members to find common-sense solutions that will help boost our economy, improve education and ease the tax burden for our working families.”
Scott will be the first black Republican to serve in the Statehouse since Reconstruction. He will represent District 117, which includes parts of Charleston and Berkeley counties. Scott takes over the seat of Rep. Tom Dantzler, who stepped down from the House after the 2008 session.
