GREENVILLE -- Proterra Inc. President and CEO Jeff Granato said he expects suppliers to follow the company to the Upstate. Announcing to a large crowd gathered at the Clemson University International Center for Automotive Research that Proterra would hire 1,300 people at its planned Greenville facility, Granato, stressed that its operations would have ripple effects across the Upstate. |

COLUMBIA -- Barry Russell, head of the state’s technical college system, will retire May 31. HE has been president of the system since 2006; before that, he was president of Midlands Tech from 1999 through 2005. In a letter to his staff, Russell said he was proud of the system's achievements. |

GREENVILLE -- If the city of Greenville decides to buy the former Hitachi building for $10 million, Proterra Inc. may occupy a portion of it to get its bus-building operations off the ground. That’s one option the city is considering as part of its commitment to provide the company temporary startup space. |

COLUMBIA -- Senators debated changes to a controversial property reassessment law on Wednesday and Thursday but again adjourned without taking action. A two-thirds vote will be needed to move any legislation forward, and neither of two proposals under consideration has that much support at this point. |

ORANGEBURG -- A settlement has been reached between Andrew Hugine, former S.C. State University president, and the university. Hugine filed a lawsuit against the school’s board of trustees after he was fired in December 2007. He had been president of the university since 2003. |
